Blackberry Curve 8300 Beats 3G IPhone in Sales

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Endgadget announced today that the Blackberry Curve 8300 beat IPhone in sales today. The 3g iPhone is second place and two other Blackberry phones come in at 3rd and 4th, Storm and Pearl.

Other Blackberry news is that the new Blackberry Curve 8900 will finally be coming to AT&T stores.  I guess they had them at T-Mobile first.

If you do have a Blackberry, you may want to find out about Blackberry Apworld, which is akin to the iPhone app store.

Verizon IPhone Rival by Microsoft

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

An announcement in the Wall Street Journal let eager cell phone users know that a rival to the Apple
IPhone is under wraps between the well liked cell phone service, Verizon, and Apple rival Microsoft. Microsoft plans to work on the hardware and software for the phone while having a third party business manufacture the actual device.  The phone is set to be released in early 2010 and is being called a code name project “Pink”.

I personally love both Microsoft and Verizon so would consider buying the combo device.  The inertia of changing cell phone providers is great too and I already have a plan set up for a Verizon cell phone.

Iphone App for Swine Flu

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

Iphone stays up to the minute with an iPhone app by Intuaps that tracks the Swine Flu epidemic.  It is still waiting for Apple to approve it so it may be too late if the H1N1 virus does not cooperate (let’s hope).    This Iphone app shows the current WHO Threat Level for the flu, a map showing confirmed and suspected cases, a subarea that shows what symptoms of flu to look for, and an alert page that displays breaking news on the Swine Flu.

If the flu really does get as bad as the 1912 Spanish flu, this ap could be useful in showing where to avoid going, especially for travellers.  The application for the 3G iPhone will be free so anyone can use it; call it a public health ap.

gPhone Launch is expected next month: October 2008

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

There is an article in NY Times that says the Google Phone is due to be released next month, Oct. 2008.    Apparently Google has made a deal with T-mobile to launch the phones that will use Android Software by Google to give free internet access to users, supported by Google ads.

The actual Google phone is being made by HTC.  More details about the phone such as price will be revealed at the end of September.

This phone is expected to rival the 3G iPhone in popularity.

gPhone gets closer: Google talks with Verizon

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

There is evidence that the gPhone or Google Phone is getting closer to being a reality.  This article from NY Times talks about the discussions between the two mega corporations.

The article talks about how agreements on the deal are potentially just 2 months away.  Does that mean release of an internet ready phone that has free web browsing supported by Google ads is only 2 months away??  If so, sign me up.

My daughter accidently racked up $40 in cell phone internet bills last month when playing with my husband’s new “bells and whistles” phone.  Granted, my husband was responsible for knowing what the costs were associated with his phone or to not let her play with it, but it is that kind of “sticker shock when you get the bill” that makes many people like me even afraid to think about using cell phone net service.  If I know it will be free then I won’t hesitate to use it.

I would love to use my cell phone to email people, to comparison shop and to find prices of stuff on Ebay when I am out garage sailing or thrift store hunting.  That is ..for free.  In my town we still have free wi-fi city wide so that would make the experience even sweeter.
